about

Between Pondicherry and this song being written I traveled north along the east coast through Chennai, Puri (where I had I interesting solo Christmas experimenting with opium), Calcutta and up to Darjeeling. Here I would meet some life long friends, the Englishman, the Irishman, the Welshman and the Dutchman; no joke. We all traveled down to Calcutta on a bus that took twenty six hours, I'd left my ruck sack and guitar in my room in Darjeeling so was traveling light for the first time in India. Whilst in Calcutta we got into the habit of taking a 20mg sleeping pill then drinking heavily, this would put you on your 'A game' as the Welshman put it. We did this for a week or so and then, burnt out, went our separate ways. I was late for my plane, due to traffic, form Calcutta to Bagdogra (I would jeep from Bagdogra to Darjeeling) and only just made it. I had to be ushered through the airport by soldiers and due to an addled mushy mind forgot my iPod and camera in the plastic trays. It did not occur to me until we were in the air. I reported this mistake to the officials at Bagdogra airport and was told to have a cup of tea and wait for news. I sat in a small restaurant inside the airport and waited, playing absentmindedly with the bill. On the bill I noticed the name of the restaurant, it was 'Bagdogra Airport Restaurant Workers Cooprative Society Ltd', which I though was absurd. It did however relieve my tension and help me to crack a smile. I spent the night in Bagdogra, my iPod was returned to me the next morning, alas my camera was gone. I headed back to Darjeeling and was met by the Dutchman, who we called Amsterdam, shortly after. Another week of drinking and it was time for me to get away from people for a while, I had also met an American woman down in Calcutta. But yes it was hard to decide between Amsterdam and the jeep ride.

lyrics

I've been reduced to a drunk, both with heart and devotion. On my journeys home I sway like the ocean, but my sides have never split so hard.
I've been here too long, I've been way too long. My passion's in the shadows, way too long. My passion's in the shadows, way too long. Dead or alive I know I'll survive and get on, I've been here too long.
And the nights spent in some place else mixing beer with sleeping pills, every morning, noon and night the same.
I've been here too long, I've been way too long. My passion's in the shadows, way too long. My passion's in the shadows, way too long. Dead or alive I know I'll survive.
It was hard to decide between Amsterdam and the jeep ride.
