I had now been in India for about four months and was coping with it very well. I had moved from Kanyakumari inland to a city called Madurai, here I would become incredibly sick. I was eating one day in a local cafeteria when I felt someone sneeze on the back of my neck. In less than twelve hours I was bed-bound with shivers and the sweats; having to roll onto my side to piss into a bucket. I was hallucinating, seeing soldiers come into my room, I did not eat for about three days. The moment I started to feel better I left for Pondicherry, the French quarter of India. I was still very weak but the food there is great for getting someone back on their feet, I ate steak and mash potatoes every day for a week. I also started to play my guitar again, it had been some time. Here I wrote the intro to Count to Zero. It was not until I headed north along the east coast to Mahabalipuram that, while sitting in an egg-shaped chair looking out to the ocean, I wrote the rest of the song.
