Speak Nearby

from BookTape by Whatthe Animalssay

about

Written by Leo.

Leo: 'Speaking nearby' is a praxis by the Vietnamese-American filmmaker and cultural theorist Trinh T. Minh-ha. In contrast to 'speaking about', it expresses the intention (in any production of meaning, but particularly filmmaking) to remain self-reflexive in an approach to a subject, not to claim its space but to be aware of its autonomy and difference.

lyrics

I heard, our faces aren’t here without the lamp to light them.
And then took his side at the stream.

To rotate quietly in a sleep.
Where no-one will see.

These hands are dry but they’re ready to trace our voices as they change from poetry to ideology.

For they’ve not taken sides but they know our bodies aren’t safe here.

So I will listen to her,
taking her time, taking care
to write and think, and speak nearby.
